Between history and nature

Located in the center of the ancient village of Filignano, in the province of Isernia, it is the right starting point for those who love trekking, mountain biking and walks in nature or, depending on the seasons, snowshoeing and winter sports.

Not far away and well connected is, in fact, the ski area of Alto Sangro in Abruzzo, the largest in central-southern Italy, which includes the municipalities of Barrea, Pescasseroli, Pescocostanzo, Rivisondoli and Roccaraso.

Considered as a natural gateway to the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise for those coming from Campania and part of Lazio, the village rises in a basin, where three other valleys follow until the first foothills of Mount Marrone, one of the peaks of the Mainarde mountain group, which give, to those who want to explore them, suggestive and wild views.

The chain, in which the borders of the provinces of Frosinone, L'Aquila and Isernia cross, together with the valley of the upper Volturno, it is an area acquired by the Park since 1990. This area offers particular environmental and naturalistic value for the species that grow there and for the rare and protected faunal species, such as: the Brown Bear Marsican, the Chamois of Abruzzo, the Golden Eagle, the Apennine wolf that can be seen during the excursions along with deer and roe deer.

Filignano has medieval origins and was part of the possessions of the powerful Abbey of San Vincenzo

It was a land of brigandage in post-unitary Italy. Being along the Gustav line, it became the scene of fierce fighting between the autumn of 1943 and the spring of 1944 that caused destruction and civilian casualties. The memory of these tragic events is preserved in the historical-military museum of Cerasuolo.

In just ten minutes by car you can reach the main centre of the province: Venafro. Venafro is considered the City of oil mentioned by Latin poets and writers, with ancient origins dating back to the Samnites, which preserves an interesting historical center culminating in the Castle Pandone.

At the foot of the Mainarde, you can visit the remains of the famous Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, founded by the Benedictine monks at the beginning of the 8th century and became one of the great Benedictine monasteries of early medieval Europe.

You can also reach in the surroundings, for a visit and a journey through time of undoubted charm: Pietrabbondante and the well-known Sanniti archaeological site of Calcatello; the village of Agnone with its Pontifical bell foundry Marinelli founded in 1040; Cassino and the famous abbey of Montecassino; the picturesque lake of Castel San Vincenzo with its banks of great scenic interest, a tourist destination for fishing enthusiasts and lovers of canoeing and small sailing boats; Lake Selva, also known as Cardito Lake, with clear waters and surrounded by dense forests.
